What does it truly mean to follow Jesus? Not in the comfortable, cultural sense we have grown accustomed to, but in the raw, costly, life-altering sense that Jesus himself described? In Mark chapter 8, verses 34 through 38, Jesus draws a line in the sand and lays out with unmistakable clarity what genuine discipleship looks like. He calls the crowd in close, not just his inner circle, but anyone willing to listen, and he presents a challenge that cuts through every comfortable assumption we might carry into a church building. The call is threefold: give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow him. These are not suggestions or spiritual ideals reserved for the especially devout. They are the defining marks of a true follower. The cross, in the world Jesus inhabited, was not a piece of jewelry or a decorative symbol. It was an instrument of death and public humiliation. When Jesus tells us to take it up, he is inviting us into a daily death to self, a continual surrender of our preferences, our comfort, and our control. The message confronts the version of Christianity that has been watered down into mere attendance and occasional participation, and replaces it with something far more demanding and far more alive. This is not a message designed to make us feel good. It is a message designed to make us genuinely free.
