Cut It Off I Gospel of Mark I Mark 9:38-50
What if the greatest obstacle standing between us and a deeper walk with God is not the culture around us, not the people who oppose us, but something far closer to home? In Mark chapter 9, Jesus delivers a strikingly direct word to his disciples, one that cuts through comfortable religion and calls us to honest self-examination. The passage challenges us to consider how we influence those who are young in their faith, whether through temptation, through the example we set, or simply through our failure to encourage those who are fighting hard to follow Jesus. The image Jesus uses is jarring on purpose: a millstone around the neck, cast into the sea. That kind of language is not accidental. It is the language of someone who is fiercely protective of his people and deeply serious about the responsibility we carry toward one another. As we sit with this passage, we are invited to ask ourselves honestly whether we are an open door for others growing in their faith, or whether the way we live has quietly become a wall that keeps them from pressing further into the life Jesus offers.
