You Belong Here I Gospel of Mark I Mark 9:30-37

What does it truly mean to be great? In Mark 9:30-37, we find the disciples walking alongside Jesus, having just witnessed miracles and heard profound teaching, and yet they are caught in an argument about which of them is the most important. Sound familiar? The tension between our desire for recognition and the call to serve is one of the oldest struggles in human nature. Jesus responds not with a lecture but with a living illustration, pulling a child into the center of the group and redefining greatness entirely. In a culture where children had no status, no rights, and nothing to offer adults, Jesus wraps his arms around one and says that welcoming the overlooked and the powerless is the same as welcoming him. That is a radical inversion of everything the world tells us about success and significance. We are challenged here to examine not just how we treat the people who can advance our standing, but how we treat the ones who cannot do anything for us at all. The message is clear and convicting: if serving feels beneath us, then leading in God's kingdom is beyond us. True strength, in the economy of heaven, looks like getting low enough to lift someone else up.
